Style Analysis

'One-Minute Time Machine' is a short film. I have chosen this film for my style analysis as I felt that it had a very interesting and quite unique style. The reason I thought this was because of the very simple nature of the film; it has one location and two characters for it's entirety. As a result, the film makes use of the 180 degree rule. Due to the restricted nature of the film, the director has had to make full use of the style of the film in order to create it to the best quality. The plot, although appearing to be restrictive, bypasses this by exploring alternate possibilities of what happens due to the nature of the One-Minute Time Machine. This style of plot is interesting in that it is essentially limitless in what the story can tell and what direction it can go in.

For our film, this research is particularly interesting as it could may influence the style of plot greatly. I found the swift cuts performed in 'One-Minute Time Machine' to epitomise the type of camera and editing work that would be needed for our film in order to create a smooth short social realism picture. The reason this is important is because it creates a divide in style between a professional film and an amateur one. 'One-Minute Time Machine' displays the style trademarks of a professional short film, even though it probably wasn't, and, as a result, is something that I think we should attempt to emulate in our film.

The reason the style of 'One-Minute Time Machine' is a good example of a professional style is due to the use of camera angles and shots throughout the film. It sets up a line, a vision of sight, and doesn't  go past it, hence the 180-degree rule. While it may not be unique in films, it propses to the vuewr that this is quite a professional, well made film. Just this style of filming suggests the director has done some research and kniws what he is doing. This reassures the audience by making them consider this to be a far less amateur film than they might have thought they were watching. As a result, it results in capturing the interest of the audience more than it otherwise might have done, showing that the style is important in terms of what it proposes to the audience about the film.
